Why do we need to have courageous conversations?

Managing and supporting people’s mental health at work is a critical and growing challenge for employers. Most people will be affected by mental health problems, either personally or through family and friends at some point in the life.

Mental ill-health impacts all businesses, of all sizes. Equally important are the positive business reasons for supporting your staff’s mental health.

What stops us from having a conversation?

Awareness of mental health is increasing, but we still face a world where people with mental health problems feel unable to speak up about it. There are many reasons someone may be reluctant to speak about this, including:

  • Stigma around mental health
  • Cultural barriers
  • Lack of confidence
  • Feeling like there is no-one to talk to
  • Fearing the other person’s response
  • Worrying it might have a negative impact on their employment

How can people managers become more confident having effective conversations about mental health?

For managers, instigating a conversation with an employee about their mental health can be daunting. For example, managers may be worried about saying the wrong thing and responding in the wrong way and potentially making the situation worse.

Completing this course will increase your confidence and ability to have these conversations.

Course Overview:

This online course is for people managers that want to make conversations about mental health part of their everyday management.

Our expert training offers managers a comprehensive action plan they can use to assess employee mental health at work. It will help them manage those who may be experiencing poor mental health, safely, with empathy and effectively.

Key Themes explored in the training:

  • How mental health difficulties can impact employees, managers, and the company.
  • Signs and symptoms of mental ill-health in the workplace.
  • How to have effective conversations as managers, that support both employer and employee.
  • The relevance of the Equality Act, how to apply reasonable adjustments, and the use of Wellness Action Plans.
  • The boundaries and challenges of managing mental health at work.
  • Signposting employees to appropriate workplace and external resources.

Learning outcomes:

Using a blended learning approach of self-led pre-course learning activities, live interactive online group training, and self-led post-course learning consolidation activities you will:

  • Gain an understanding of how to spot mental ill-health at work; take an effective approach and have both a supportive and mutually useful conversation about an employee’s mental health.
  • Be introduced to key skills you can practise such as: empathy, active listening and asking strengths-based questions that will empower an employee to take charge of their mental wellbeing.
  • Be better able to make reasonable adjustments and use Wellness Action Plans to support mental ill-health and recovery.
  • Understand the importance of managing time off and knowing how to facilitate a supportive and effective return to work.
  • Become familiar with the importance of developing boundaries when supporting employees with mental ill-health, including: what support looks and feels like; and when and where to signpost employees for further internal and external support.
