I am Lydia from Bournemouth.
I am currently studying Psychology, French and Drama A levels. I have a passion for Psychology and intend studying Psychology at University when I leave school next year.
I am interested in Mental Health and it is important to me because of my family’s experience. A family member was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety and Bulimia and experienced a traumatic incident that left them feeling suicidal. However, their mental health has now improved and she is currently studying to become a Nurse.
I wanted to help my family member but as a teenager myself felt helpless; it was difficult to understand the complexity of their problems and I found myself ‘‘drained’ trying to support them. I learnt the importance of maintaining my own mental wellbeing and did this through my varied hobbies. Musical theatre and singing are my passion and singing is a great way for me to release stress from school pressures and general life, when things get difficult.
I became a Dorset Mind Young Ambassador to help other young people understand mental health problems and learn ways to cope. I have seen how things can improve with the right support.
