I’m Becky, originally from London, but I have lived in the Dorset area for 17 years.
I am in my final year at Bournemouth University studying Psychology. I hope to go on to complete my Masters and Doctorate degree in either a Clinical or Neuropsychology field as they interest me most. Educationally and personally, I am interested in young people’s mental health and how I can help people with mental health conditions. I am also interested in general functions of the brain and how behaviour is impacted through injury and other factors.
I would like to make a difference to young people lives. Mental health has been an issue for me for many years, especially depression and anxiety. At the time I felt I couldn’t talk about it; like I was the only one going through it and it wasn’t normal. This is the stigma I want to help break; no one should have to suffer in silence. I feel mental health should be openly and positively discussed.
During school there was a lack of awareness or attention on mental health or how to cope with stress that naturally comes with school life. Through Dorset Mind, I want to help schools to increase awareness so that the students aren’t ashamed to have a bad day and know it’s okay to not be okay ALL the time. I hope this will be help others to learn how to deal with stressful or negative life/school events.
In my spare time I enjoy baking/cooking, hanging out with friends, going on spontaneous adventures and making memories! I really want to see as much of the world as I can and if possible volunteer in some of those places either helping vulnerable people/animals or helping raise money or awareness for a charity.
