Last night’s screening of ‘Back to the Future’ at the ABC Cinema Bournemouth attracts national attention… We all know that Marty McFly quote from the 1985 film ‘If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.’ And it really does capture the atmosphere of last night’s tribute to marked the closure of the ABC Cinema, making way for a new cinema multiplex… ‘Back to the Future’ was the chosen film to be screened in aid of Dorset Mind. Originally intended for just one screen, the popularity of the film was indicated by the speed in which over 700 tickets SOLD OUT – in the end it was shown on all three screens! The event itself was a nostalgic trip down memory lane. There were original posters and merchandise on display, and a fabulous cake and cupcakes all carrying the ABC logo. Cinemagoers were also treated to a goodie bag containing popcorn, a drink and a film still. But the real coup of the night was the presence of a DeLoran car outside the cinema. In the film, the iconic car took Marty McFly back to 1955 where he had to ensure his parents fell in love. It caused a real stir among the cinemagoers and passersby alike. The closure of the cinema also coincides with the ‘retirement’ of General Manager Spencer Clark. He was presented with a cinema-themed cake by his Manager Richard Rowe on behalf of his staff, to show their gratitude to him. The ABC brand name began back in 1928, with the cinema in Westover Road opening in June 1937. The brand name gradually disappeared as Odeon Cinemas took over the company in 2000. The New Westover Cinema at BH2 has 10 cinema screens and seats just over 2,500 people. It’s a start-of-the-art complex and has been designed with the best scientific knowledge and engineering skill. The cinema is due to open in February.
