Running for Mental Health
What better timing to run for their local mental health charity than the year in which Heads Together
is the official charity of the marathon
? Spearheaded by Princes William and Harry – and Kate of course, never has mental health been so often at the forefront of media awareness. And national Mind
is a charity partner of Heads Together.
Our runners have however chosen us to run for – as their local mental health charity
. They all have their own reasons for running for better mental health…
Facing his toughest challenge yet…
is founder of The Stable
chain of pizza, pie and cider restaurants. He and his wife Nikki
built up their restaurant business over the last ten years, and now have 17 restaurants – many of them in the South West
Richard explains why he decided to take on the challenge of the London Marathon. “When someone is coping with mental illness there’s often not anything you can say to help them. Running the marathon is my way of feeling like I am doing something instead…”
Richard knows how scarce mental health services
are in West Dorset. He wants to do something positive to help change that.
“Mental health, with all its complexities, is one of the biggest challenges facing us all today. And here in the South West it’s massively under-funded, with services in rural areas like Dorset – love it as I do – being really tough for people to access.”

First time marathon runner
is a dedicated Occupational Therapist. In her work, Sarah sees how physical illness can also have a profound affect on mental health. Sarah explains how running has helped her “Running has been a big part of my recovery from mental illness and something that continues to keep me well.”
Sarah also has lived experience of mental illness and is aware that there are currently few services for young people in Dorset
. “The earlier people are given support the better chance people have in their recovery. I feel that if I’d had help and support earlier I wouldn’t have spent so many years in and out of hospital.

Making London 2017 her third marathon
Louise Corbin has already run two marathons
, but it’s London that she anticipates enjoying the most, as its her home turf. Running has always been a passion of Louise, and she chose to support Dorset Mind as a charity close to her heart.
Louise explains “One of the reasons I love running is that it helps to clear my mind. Our heads are our precious places and often we have no control of what goes on in it.”
“I have my bad days like everyone else but I have never suffered acutely. My empathy goes out to anyone, especially those who I love that have. By running the marathon for Dorset Mind I hope to support them, making this wonderful life a happier one for anyone out there.”

The Virgin Money London Marathon takes place on 23rd April at 10:00 for mass entrants. We’ll be watching it on tv to try to spot our three Dorset Mind t-shirts!
